Who is Paul McCartney? Paul McCartney was the first of the Beatles to team up with John Lennon when they were still lads in high school.  Paul was born on June 18, 1942 to Mary and James McCartney.  Paul first met John Lennon, then leader of the band the Quarrymen on July 5, 1957.  Shortly after their meeting, Paul was invited to join John’s band.  Although famous for his bass playing, at the time, Paul was asked to play rhythm guitar when he first joined.  Within the year, the band expanded to include Paul’s younger friend George Harrison, who took the spot of lead guitarist.

In March 1999 Paul was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist. Twenty years earlier in 1979, Guinness World Records described McCartney as “the Most Successful Composer and Recording Artist of All Time.  His credits include 60 gold discs, which include 42 as a Beatle including one with the Beatles and Billy Preston and 17 as a solo artist.

Paul was knighted in March 1997, by Queen Elizabeth II for his prodigious services to music.
